Why Jacksonville Homeowners Choose Solar

More Jacksonville homeowners are looking into solar every year, not because it’s free (it isn’t), but because it reduces what you owe Ameren Illinois every month and builds equity instead of renting your power indefinitely. Here’s why solar makes sense in Jacksonville right now.

Lower Your Monthly Bill

Generate your own power and reduce what you owe Ameren Illinois every month, with $0-down financing options available through our lease/PPA partner.

Built for West-Central Illinois Weather

Jacksonville sits on the prairie of west-central Illinois, roughly midway between Springfield and Quincy, with real winter cold, ice, and humid summers. Panels are mounted and angled to shed snow and hold up to seasonal swings, not just perform on a mild-climate spec sheet.

A Real Illinois Track Record

61 completed installs across Illinois to date, all on Ameren Illinois or ComEd’s grid, plus more than 2,000 company-wide. See the honest picture on Jacksonville and Morgan County below, not stock photos.

You’re Already Paying for Power. Why Not Own It?

Every month, a payment leaves your account for electricity, and that money buys you nothing you keep. Here’s the real difference between renting your power and owning it.

Without Solar
Pay Ameren Illinois every month, indefinitely
Rate increases are outside your control
$0 equity built from your payments
Nothing to show after 25 years of bills
With Solar
Own your power production
Lock in predictable monthly costs
Build real equity in your system
A tangible asset on your property

NABCEP-certified installation, an A+ BBB rating, and EnergySage’s 2026 Local Installer of the Year award. All independently verifiable, not self-reported.

We Explain Illinois Shines Instead of Overselling It

RECs, program capacity, and Ameren Illinois’s rebate eligibility explained honestly and specific to your Jacksonville address, not a generic “go solar for free” pitch.

A Financing Fit, Not a Sales Quota

$0-down Lease or PPA options through LightReach, or ownership through a Salal Credit Union loan or cash purchase. We walk through both so you choose what actually fits your goals.

How Home Solar Actually Works

Understanding how a residential solar system works helps you ask the right questions before you sign anything. Here’s the short version.

Solar Panels

Mounted on your roof, panels convert sunlight into DC electricity. We size the array to your household’s actual usage, not a generic package.

Inverter

Converts DC power from the panels into the AC electricity your home actually runs on, the same current Ameren Illinois delivers.

Utility Meter

Tracks power flowing to and from the grid under Ameren Illinois’s tariff, so your system’s production is measured and credited accurately.

Monitoring

Track production from your phone, so you always know exactly what your system is generating.

What to Expect: Your Solar Installation Timeline

Illinois timelines run a little longer than some states because Illinois Shines application processing and Ameren Illinois interconnection review add steps beyond the physical installation. Many projects are installed within 30 to 60 days of signing; we’ll give you a project-specific timeline before you sign anything.

STEP 1

Free Consultation & Usage Review

We review your last 12 months of Ameren Illinois usage and use Aurora Solar’s industry-leading design software to precisely model your roof’s sun exposure and shading.

STEP 2

Custom System Design & Financing

We size your system to your actual usage, and you choose the financing route (Lease/PPA or cash/loan purchase) that fits your goals.

STEP 3

Illinois Shines Application & Interconnection

We handle the Illinois Shines project application through our Approved Vendor and file the interconnection application with Ameren Illinois on your behalf. This step is often the biggest factor in overall timeline.

STEP 4

Installation Day

Our NABCEP-certified crew installs your system. Most residential jobs are completed in a day or two, depending on system size.

STEP 5

Inspection & Permission to Operate

Local inspection and Ameren Illinois’s permission-to-operate sign-off happen before your system is switched on.

STEP 6

Monitoring & Ongoing Support

You get app access to track production in real time, and SolQ stays available if you ever have questions about your system.

Serving Jacksonville and the Rest of Morgan County

Jacksonville is the county seat of Morgan County, home to roughly 17,600 residents, situated on the prairie of west-central Illinois about midway between Springfield and Quincy. The city has long punched above its weight educationally: Illinois College, founded in 1829, was one of the first colleges in the Midwest and issued Illinois’s first college degrees, part of why Jacksonville earned the nickname “Athens of the West” in the 1800s. MacMurray College operated in Jacksonville from 1846 until its closure in 2020, a 174-year run that shaped generations of the city’s identity. Jacksonville is also home to the Illinois School for the Deaf and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, two of the state’s residential schools. History runs deep here too: Abraham Lincoln delivered a notable antislavery speech in what is now Central Park on September 6, 1856, and the Woodlawn Farm on the city’s edge operated as a documented Underground Railroad station. On the manufacturing side, Reynolds Consumer Products runs two plants here making Hefty trash bags and slider food bags, employing more than 750 people combined, and Nestlé USA has operated a 225,000-square-foot plant in Jacksonville for 51 years, the sole U.S. producer of Coffee mate powdered creamer, employing about 170 people. The Eli Bridge Company, founded in Jacksonville in 1900 and still headquartered there today, built the first portable Ferris wheel and remains one of the country’s oldest ride manufacturers. Outside city limits, Morgan County’s smaller communities include South Jacksonville, Waverly, Meredosia, Franklin, Murrayville, Woodson, Chapin, Curran, Concord, Berlin, Glasgow, Naples, Lynnville, and Exeter. Ameren Illinois is the electric delivery utility for Jacksonville and Morgan County, confirmed directly through the City of Jacksonville’s own utility guidance; the city also participates in a Municipal Electric Aggregation Program that negotiates the supply portion of residential electric rates through a third-party supplier, a separate arrangement from delivery service and interconnection, both of which stay with Ameren Illinois regardless of which supplier a household chooses. SolQ installs throughout Ameren Illinois’s Morgan County territory; if Ameren Illinois powers your home here, we can likely put you on solar. Is Your Jacksonville Home a Good Fit for Solar?

Most Jacksonville homes are strong solar candidates. Here’s what we actually check before we design your system.

Roof Direction

South- and west-facing sections get the most consistent sun. East-facing roofs still perform well; production just shifts to a morning peak.

Shading

Mature trees near Jacksonville’s established near-downtown neighborhoods, including areas close to the Illinois College and former MacMurray campuses, may need trimming. We use Aurora Solar’s precision modeling plus an on-site check during your free consultation, not a guess from a satellite photo.

System Sizing

Sized to your last 12 months of Ameren Illinois usage, not your roof size. Across our completed Illinois projects, residential systems have typically ranged from around 6 kW for smaller households up to 20 kW or more for larger homes, EVs, and heat pumps.

Your Home’s Roof Type

Jacksonville’s mix of historic homes near downtown and newer subdivisions farther out both work well for solar; roof type matters less than available sun-facing space and your household’s usage.

Ameren Illinois: What to Know in Jacksonville

Ameren Illinois is the electric delivery utility for Jacksonville and all of Morgan County. Here’s the real breakdown, not a one-size-fits-all pitch. For the full territory-wide picture, see our Ameren Illinois solar hub.

Ameren Illinois

Morgan County / West-Central Illinois

Ameren Illinois serves Jacksonville, South Jacksonville, Waverly, Meredosia, Franklin, Murrayville, and the rest of Morgan County. Since January 1, 2025, new solar customers are placed on Smart Solar Billing instead of legacy full-retail net metering; exported energy is credited against the supply portion of your bill, not the full retail rate. At interconnection, Ameren Illinois has you choose between kWh usage netting and monetary value netting, a permanent choice for the system’s life. New systems are also eligible for a one-time Distributed Generation rebate of $300 per kilowatt of installed capacity, plus a separate $300 per kilowatt-hour rebate for battery storage; neither is recurring, and each is available only once per system. The battery rebate requires enrollment in one of three Ameren Illinois rate programs (Peak Time Rewards, Real Time Pricing, or Power Smart Pricing), not automatic just because you added a battery.

If your Jacksonville-area system was installed and interconnected before December 31, 2024, you keep full legacy net metering for that system’s life, up to 30 years. We confirm exactly which terms apply before you sign anything.

Illinois Shines: How the Incentive Actually Works

Illinois Shines is the state’s Adjustable Block Program, administered on behalf of the Illinois Power Agency to help the state meet its renewable energy goals. Here’s how it actually works for a Jacksonville system: when your solar array generates electricity, it creates Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), the tradable proof that clean energy was produced. Through Illinois Shines, an Approved Vendor can sell those RECs into the program in exchange for payment, which is typically used to help offset your system cost. SolQ is a registered Designee under multiple Approved Vendors participating in Illinois Shines. We are not the State of Illinois, the Illinois Power Agency, the Illinois Commerce Commission, or Ameren Illinois, and we don’t control REC pricing or program capacity.

A few things worth knowing upfront: REC value depends on current program pricing and block capacity, set by the program administrator, not by SolQ, and is typically factored into your financing rather than paid to you directly. If your system’s RECs are sold into Illinois Shines, you’re compensated for that environmental attribute; you aren’t separately claiming the system was “free.” We’ll show you the current program mechanics that apply to your specific Jacksonville proposal, not a number pulled from an old rate card.

Net Metering in Illinois: What Changed

If you’ve heard Illinois solar rules “changed” and weren’t sure what that meant, here’s the straight version for Jacksonville homeowners.

Smart Solar Billing, Since January 2025

Since January 1, 2025, new Ameren Illinois solar customers are automatically placed on Smart Solar Billing rather than legacy full-retail net metering. This applies to systems installed from that date forward.

Existing Solar Is Grandfathered

If your system was installed and interconnected before December 31, 2024, you keep full legacy net metering benefits for the life of that system.

A One-Time DG Rebate Is Available

Ameren Illinois offers a one-time Distributed Generation rebate of $300 per kilowatt of installed generating capacity, plus a separate $300 per kilowatt-hour rebate for battery storage. Not a recurring credit.

Expanding an Existing System

Ameren Illinois customers with legacy net metering can generally expand system capacity by up to 100% and keep full legacy benefit on the expansion. We walk through exactly what applies to your account before you decide.

Illinois Solar Incentives, Straight Talk

No State Income Tax Credit

Jacksonville’s residential solar economics run through Illinois Shines’ REC value and Ameren Illinois’s DG Rebate, not a state income tax credit, which Illinois doesn’t offer. Be wary of anyone pitching one.

Property Tax: Capped, Not Exempt

Illinois uses an alternate valuation that assesses your home as if it had a conventional system instead of solar, applying whichever value is lower. It caps the tax impact rather than exempting it, and isn’t automatic; you (or SolQ) file with the Morgan County Assessor’s Office.

Federal Credit: Financing-Dependent Now

The 30% federal residential credit (Section 25D) ended for cash and loan purchases not completed by December 31, 2025. Lease and PPA agreements can still pass through a federal credit through 2027 under a separate provision. See our FAQ for the honest breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is solar really “free” in Jacksonville?

No, and we won’t ever tell you it is. Illinois Shines pays for the environmental attributes (RECs) your system produces, which can meaningfully offset your cost, but it isn’t free equipment or installation. A $0-down Lease or PPA means no upfront cash from you, not that the system has no cost; you’re paying for the power it produces over the contract term instead.

Is SolQ affiliated with the State of Illinois, the Illinois Power Agency, or my utility?

No. SolQ is an independent solar installer and a registered Designee under multiple Approved Vendors participating in Illinois Shines. We are not the State of Illinois, the Illinois Power Agency, the Illinois Commerce Commission, or Ameren Illinois, and we don’t set program rules, REC pricing, or utility rebate terms.

Does SolQ have completed solar installs in Jacksonville yet?

Not yet on file, and Morgan County doesn’t have one on file either. What we do have is more than 60 completed installs across Illinois and over 2,000 company-wide, an NABCEP-certified crew, an A+ BBB rating, and EnergySage’s 2026 Local Installer of the Year award. We’d rather tell you the local number honestly than pretend otherwise.

Is the federal solar tax credit still available in Jacksonville?

For cash and loan purchases, no. The 30% federal residential credit (Section 25D) ended for systems not completed by December 31, 2025. Lease/PPA customers still benefit indirectly, since our financing partner owns the system and claims a separate federal credit for commercial-owned solar (Section 48E, active through 2027), part of how they offer $0-down payments below what you’re currently paying Ameren Illinois.

Do I keep the RECs from my Jacksonville solar system, or does SolQ?

It depends on how you finance. If you own your system (cash or loan), you own the RECs and can choose to sell them into Illinois Shines. If you finance through a Lease or PPA, the financing company typically owns the system and its RECs unless your contract states otherwise.

How does Ameren Illinois credit my solar production in Jacksonville?

Ameren Illinois customers choose between two export-crediting methods, kWh usage netting or monetary value netting, at the time of application, permanent once made. Systems interconnected before December 31, 2024 keep legacy full-retail net metering for up to 30 years. For the full territory-wide picture, see our Ameren Illinois solar hub.

Jacksonville participates in a Municipal Electric Aggregation Program. Does that change who handles my solar interconnection?

No. The City of Jacksonville’s aggregation program negotiates a supply rate with a third-party electricity supplier on residents’ behalf; it doesn’t change who delivers power to your home or who processes your solar interconnection. Ameren Illinois remains the delivery utility and handles interconnection, net-billing setup, and permission-to-operate regardless of which supplier is on your account.

How long does a Jacksonville solar installation take, start to finish?

Many projects install within 30 to 60 days of signing, though Illinois Shines processing and Ameren Illinois interconnection review can extend timelines. Installation itself is usually a day or two, depending on system size.

What areas around Jacksonville does SolQ serve?

SolQ installs throughout Jacksonville and the rest of Morgan County, including South Jacksonville, Waverly, Meredosia, Franklin, Murrayville, Woodson, and Chapin, across Ameren Illinois’s territory. For the broader statewide picture, visit our Illinois solar hub.
